The Challenge

Canada’s transportation sector accounts for approximately one-quarter of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions. While vehicle electrification will play a growing role in light-duty applications, biofuels and other low-carbon liquid fuels offer an immediate, practical pathway for reducing emissions across the full spectrum of transportation. Delivered through the infrastructure already in place, in vehicles already on the road.

Unlike the electricity sector, where renewable generation has made substantial inroads, transportation remains overwhelmingly dependent on petroleum-based fuels. Road transport alone contributes roughly 86% of sector emissions, with aviation, marine, and rail accounting for the remainder. Canada’s vast geography, dispersed population, cold climate, and resource-based economy mean no single technology or approach can meet its transportation needs.

For sectors where electrification remains technically or economically impractical – including long-haul trucking, marine shipping, aviation, and remote operations – biofuels are more than a temporary fix; they are a critical long-term component of decarbonization strategies. Fleet turnover cycles span decades, infrastructure investments require long planning horizons, and different transport modes face fundamentally different technical constraints.

The evidence supports this approach. Canadian clean fuel consumption has grown substantially in recent years, with renewable fuel volumes increasing by 11% in 2024 alone, building on 28% growth in 2023. These fuels avoided an estimated 13.3 megatonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions in 2024, which is more than double the reductions achieved in 2020. The lifecycle carbon intensity of these fuels continues to decline as production technologies improve and supply chains mature.

About This Webinar Series

This free webinar series, with support from Natural Resources Canada, brings together industry experts, policymakers, technology providers, and practitioners to explore how biofuels and other clean fuels function in real-world transportation applications. Over the course of a year, five quarterly sessions running from March 2026 through March 2027, participants will examine the fuels, production pathways, technologies, infrastructure requirements, economics, and regulatory landscape for each major transportation sector.

Developed by Advanced Biofuels Canada in partnership with leading industry stakeholders, the series provides a comprehensive, sector-by-sector examination of the opportunities, challenges, and practical considerations for integrating low-carbon fuels across Canada’s transportation system. Each session blends technical detail with real-world insights, featuring case studies from Canadian operations and perspectives from professionals actively working to integrate clean fuels into their fleets and supply chains.

The series is designed to move beyond general awareness and toward actionable knowledge. Participants will gain a detailed understanding of which fuel types are suited to specific applications, what infrastructure and handling requirements apply, how greenhouse gas reductions are quantified and verified under Canadian regulations, and what incentive programs and compliance obligations affect procurement decisions.

Who Should Attend

These free webinars are designed for professionals across the transportation and energy sectors who are evaluating, implementing, or advising on clean fuel adoption:

  • Fleet operators and transportation managers seeking to understand fuel options, compatibility requirements, and operational considerations for transitioning to lower-carbon alternatives
  • Fuel distributors, refiners, and infrastructure providers exploring market opportunities, supply chain requirements, and technical specifications for clean fuel products
  • Policy makers and regulators at federal, provincial, and municipal levels who develop, implement, or enforce clean fuel standards, carbon pricing mechanisms, and transportation emissions policies
  • Sustainability officers and corporate decarbonization teams responsible for scope 1 and scope 3 emissions reduction strategies, ESG reporting, and climate commitment implementation
  • Technology providers and researchers working on fuel production pathways, vehicle compatibility, emissions measurement, or related technical challenges
  • Financial analysts and investors evaluating opportunities in the clean fuels sector or assessing transition risks in transportation-dependent portfolios
  • Anyone working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, whether in a technical, operational, commercial, or advisory capacity
